Famous For Sarah Palin's Son

It seems that no matter where you go in the world, people become very interested in the children of famous politicians. When the politician is a very polarizing one, then it becomes an even bigger story of interest. That’s where Sarah Palin comes along, who was the former Governor of Alaska from 2006 to 2009.

During the 2008 presidential election, Republican candidate John McCain selected Palin as his running mate, tabbing her as the potential vice president. At the time, not many people knew who Palin was, but she became an instant headline overnight. One of the bigger storylines that came from the Palin family during this time was when she announced that her then-17 year old daughter Bristol was pregnant with the child of Levi Johnston.

Just a few months prior, Sarah Palin had given birth to her youngest child named Trig, but there were people who immediately questioned if she was actually the mother. At the time of Trig’s birth, Palin was 44 years old, and some believed that it was actually Bristol’s first child with Johnston. There were conspiracies abound on the internet, with timelines trying to follow what was happening.

Palin said that “Voters have every right to ask candidates for information if they so choose. I’ve pointed out that it was seemingly fair game during the 2008 election for many on the left to badger my doctor and lawyer for proof that Trig is in fact my child. Conspiracy-minded reporters and voters had a right to ask…which they have repeatedly.”

Trig was born a month earlier than the announced due date, and reports said that Sarah Palin was still traveling extensively while eight months pregnant via airplane. Some even reported that they didn’t have any indication that she was pregnant, and it’s been the cause of debate for the past decade. Regardless of who the mother is, there was still a child to raise in the Palin household, and it wasn’t going to be an easy feat as Trig was diagnosed with Down syndrome while still in the womb.

Following Trig’s birth, Sarah Palin said that “Trig is beautiful and already adored by us. We knew through early testing he would face special challenges, and we feel privileged that God would entrust us with this gift and allow us unspeakable joy as he entered our lives. We have faith that every baby is created for good purpose and has potential to make this world a better place. We are truly blessed.”

Not many people knew that Trig would have special needs outside of Sarah and husband Todd themselves, with older daughter Willow not being informed before the pregnancy. “We didn’t find out he had Down syndrome till the day he was born,” she said. “So that was kind of a shock, but we didn’t really care. He’s still our brother.” Members of the press were also filled in following Trig’s birth, and it would be plastered all over the front page of tabloids around the United States.

Palin said that “Some people have been quite cruel,” following the birth of her child. “I am on the internet and (have seen) some horrible ads about him that he should have never been born. But, for the most part, people have been so loving and supportive of us that that encourages us and it makes us know that there is a lot of hope and there is a lot of love in this country.”

Trig was front and center during the 2008 campaign, which would ultimately be won by Democratic nominee Barack Obama and his vice president Joe Biden. That might have been the best thing for the young Trig, as he was able to get out of the spotlight once the election was over and he wouldn’t be featured prominently as the vice president’s son.

Now 10 years old, Sarah and Todd Palin have said that Trig has been raised in their home the same way as their other children, with no differences in how he’s treated. Upon one of his recent birthdays, Bristol Palin said on social media that “I wish I could put into words the joy that this boy brings into our lives.” She added that “Trig continues to light up our world. He is the boss around here and continues to fill our days with so much laughter! He is stubborn and knows exactly what he wants – right this second…Trig is our definition of perfection and there isn’t one day that goes by without us feeling so thankful that God chose us to be his family.”

Trig has continued to be seen in the public both on social media and in appearances with his family, but the pressure of being in Washington, D.C. didn’t have to happen as he gets to stay in Alaska. The family remains very close, as Trig has four siblings and several nieces and nephews to keep him occupied throughout the days.
