“I think reality TV is so popular because it makes everyone in the country feel like, ‘Hey, I can be on TV. I can be a star overnight.’ I think America also has a little voyeurism in their hearts.” Shanna Moakler is a reality television star, actress and former model who is best known for winning the 1995 Miss New York USA beauty pageant title. Later crowned the first runner-up at the Miss USA 1995 pageant, she was crowned Miss USA as Chelsi Smith took the Miss Universe title, which pushed Moakler even further into stardom as she made regular appearances on shows like Pacific Blue. In December 2001, she was named Playboy’s Playmate of the Month and has continued to make headlines over the last decade thanks to her high profile relationships with Billy Idol, Oscar De La Hoya and Dennis Quaid as well as her tumultuous marriage to rock drummer Travis Barker. Now 42 years old, let’s check in on the mother of three and uncover her journey to fortune and fame!
Shanna Lynn Moakler came into this world on March 28, 1975 in Providence, Rhode Island where she was a self-described tomboy as a child. She loved to play outside and run around on her grandfather’s farm while spending the rest of her time competitively roller skating. She attended Barrington High School and, because she stood at only 4’11” tall and weighed a scrawny 75 pounds, she says she was considered one of “the biggest dorks” in her class. By her senior year, however, she blossomed as a woman and settled into her new popularity as she dated the captain of the football team and was later voted best dressed in her class.
Determined to become a full-time model, Moakler moved to Miami, Florida after high school graduation and, after finding little success in Miami, moved north to New York. While in the Big Apple, she won the Miss New York USA pageant title, which allowed her to represent New York in the 1995 Miss USA beauty pageant. Although she saw the crown go to Chelsi Smith, she was named runner-up and later took the crown when Chelsi won the 1995 Miss Universe. Crowned the new Miss USA 1995, Moakler became a national celebrity and was invited to dozens of autograph signings and celebrity events, not to mention it paved the way to her career as an actress.
She made her television debut on Due South in 1996 and later joined Dean Cain and Teri Hatcher in an episode of Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. In 1998, she was cast as Officer Monica Harper on the USA Network’s crime drama series, Pacific Blue, and was a series regular for the next two seasons as a rookie cop who patrolled the Santa Monica beaches on a bicycle. Ironically, Moakler was incredibly accident prone when the cameras weren’t rolling and later admitted that she’d often crash into actors during filming. Luckily, that isn’t what ended her career on the series as she signed on to become a celebrity contestant on the E! Network’s Search Party.
Moakler made her way into film with credits on the silver screen in Poison Ivy: The New Seduction, Telling You and The Wedding Singer, the latter of which is how she met rocker Billy Idol. With instant chemistry, Moakler and Idol started dating but the romance was short-lived as Moakler met and fell in love with professional boxer Oscar De La Hoya. The couple soon moved in together and got engaged as Moakler announced she was pregnant with a daughter. Sadly, their relationship ended in September 2000 when Moakler spotted Hoya at the Latin Grammy Awards show with another woman on his arm as she sat at home with their baby. Calling off the engagement, Moakler filed a $62.5 million palimony suit that was later settled out of court as Moakler snuggled up with actor Dennis Quaid for an eight-month fling.
Newly single, Moakler got the best revenge in 2001 when she was named Playboy’s Playmate of the Month in December. As the magazine rekindled her fame, she found love again with rock drummer Travis Barker and wasn’t afraid to show her fun side when she joined Ashton Kutcher on an episode of Punk’d to prank Barker on the series. Months later, Barker proposed at Disneyland with Moakler surprising Barker with her own proposal a few days later. They married on October 30, 2004, just a year after welcoming their son, Landon Asher, into the world. The following year, they added to their family with the birth of their daughter, Alabama Luella, on December 24, 2005.
Despite what seemed like another Hollywood love story, Moakler made headlines in 2006 when Barker filed for divorce as Moakler threw a divorce party in Las Vegas to celebrate. Over the next two years, the couple had an on-again, off-again relationship before officially ending their four-year marriage in 2008 with a huge custody battle that resulted in joint custody as they were forced to navigate their newly formed friendship and roles as co-parents. To no one’s surprise, they’ve continued to struggle with the police called to their shared home in Los Angeles in 2014 after a verbal argument quickly escalated and led each to be arrested. As of 2016, the couple claims to have put their past behind them for the sake of their children.
In 2014, Moakler turned heads when she returned to reality television after a nearly a decade on Hollywood Exes. “I have always loved reality TV and I have been offered tons and tons of reality TV projects across the board, like you name it,” she said of her return. “I like this one because it isn’t like I had to carry the weight of a show on my own, and it was other women who have had similar life experiences as me. I was interested to learn from these different women.”
In the years since, the 42-year-old Moakler joined the Miss Nevada USA pageant as executive producer and, since 2014, has found love with Hells Angels biker, Bryan Sollima. “He is a regular guy and I’ve never been happier.”
